MacHeather sighed and wiped her arm across her face, wiping away the sweat as she pulled the piñata out of the taxi.
"Och, the wee bairns better appreciate this," she grumbled to herself. The MacCousin had not been getting a lot of sleep lately and was uncharacteristically grumpy. Secretly she was looking forward to taking a whack at the piñata herself.
She walked into the front door of the cantina and pulled in her prize. Brenda and Pen stared at the piñata. "An' Aye have two more like this in the taxi," said Heather with a great deal of satisfaction. For the adult parties.
"A bat," murmured Pen, shaking her head in disbelief. "Why am I not suprised?"
"I'm suprised you didn't have a specially made one of Nunkies," chortled Brenda.
The MacCousin blushed. She had considered it. But she decided it would be a bad thing. What would MacNunkies say if he found it. Then again...she could hide it from him. A strange grin crept it's way around her face. Pen shook her friend and was finally able to bring Heather out of her fantasy world.
"Okay, let's hang that sucker up," said Pen.
The threesome managed to rope 'Miguel' and two of the taller waiters from the cantina into climbing up and hefting the large bat pinata into the rafters. Heather carried in the two other piñatas into the cantina.
Brenda tied the string to one of the corner of a table.
"So what time will the wee bairns show up," asked Pen.
"In about an hour, I imagine," said Brenda, beginning to glow once again.
[An hour and a half later]
"Ole!" yelled twenty children as the MacCousin swung at the piñata unsuccessfully once again. This time she barely missed Pen, who was now in charge of pulling on the string.
Heather had originally been in charge of the piñata, but young Daniel Joseph Patrick Kelly had insisted that she wasn't playing fair. After all the children had the chances at the piñata, she had decided they had a point and offered to take a swing at the bat herself.
Pedro and Margarita, two children of the staff at the cantina tied the bandana around her eyes. Caile and Juan spun her around. The MacCousin, being her typically clumsy self had provided great entertainment for all. She nearly fell down at one point.
After she nearly hit her fellow Glow Worm, Heather took off the bandana.
"This is hopeless. I think we need to change the rules a bit," she said in an undertone to Pen. "Let's stop raising and lowering the thing and get one of the littler kids to bat it down."
"Agreed," assented Pen. She needed to get ready for the grownup party anyway.
Heather wrapped the bandana around young Angel's eyes and within two tries the piñata was down for the count.
The children greedily began scooping out the candy and then dropped it as the MacCousin glared at them and spoke eerily enough with her mother's voice.
"Drop that candy this instant!" Heather had a strange flashback to third grade, but quickly got out of the flashback.
Pen and Heather divided the candy up into equal portions and each child had ten pieces. In fact, when their families arrived in the cantina, most of the children complained of tummy-aches.
Brenda shook her head at the children as they left, wandering into the room in her jalapeño costume. "Didn't they tell you to not spoil your dinner?" she chided the kids.
"Well," said the MacCousin. "It's back to the shrine time for me. Party extra hardy for me."
She hugged Pen and Brenda and then started walking back to the shrine. She hoped the Schanke's party would be worth missing the Cinco de Mayo celebration.
Pen and Brenda watched her go.
"Ten dollars that she decides to go back and get a Nunkies piñata," said Pen.
Brenda chortled. "I don't think they'll be any takers on that bet," she replied.
